About me - and why I just love to paint
Tracing the family tree had shown me that the love of art and design had often shown itself in our family, not just as keen amateurs but also professionally. My father was a fair watercolourist, and I used to spend hours learning from his work. He was quite chuffed when I had a painting of my own hung in Worcester Art Gallery whilst still at primary school. But at the crucial point in my schooling I turned down an opportunity to go to Art College and opted instead for a more predictable career in engineering. Many, many years later, with nerves frayed and blood pressure rising as an engineering manager, I managed to escape with early retirement and at last indulge myself in the painting I had so much enjoyed since childhood.
The need to escape the stress of the rat race has clearly been a big influence on my approach to art. I love walking, touring and camping in the great outdoors, spending hours soaking up the glorious landscapes all around us. And I have an urge to share the results with others, through my painting. Okay, my style is traditional, but I believe there is still a need for all types of work and fortunately I can leave the shock and horror genre to others.
Working from my studio at home in Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire, I now paint mainly in acrylics. I have exhibited and sold widely as an artist member of the Oxford Art Society, Lechlade Art Society and Faringdon Art Society, as well as previously with the Fosseway Artists, West Ox Arts, and Stanford Art Group. I've staged many one-man and small group exhibitions over the past 25 years, and been a regular contributor in Oxfordshire Artweeks. My preference is for a traditional approach to landscape and other subjects, inviting the viewer to share my feelings by recreating the atmospheric and evocative effects I find so compelling.
